Oculoplastic Surgery Questions & Answers:

What is Eyelid Surgery or Blepharoplasty?
Eyelid surgery or Blepharoplasty is also known as Eye Lift which involves the removal of excess skin and pocket of fats from upper and lower eyelids that result in improving the vision and appearance of droopy eyelids. This procedure is used to treat loose excess skin on upper eyelids that interferes with vision, excess skin under lower eyelids, eye bags and puffiness under the eyes. Eyelid surgery treats all these conditions resulting in a more youthful appearance as well as improving peripheral vision of the eyes. Blepharoplasty is performed within an out-patient setting with the doctor performing surgery on the upper eyelids first. The surgeon makes a cut along the fold of the eye and removes excess skin, muscle, fat and then closes the cut. For lower eyelid, the surgeon makes the cut in the lower part of the eyelid and as before removes excess sagging skin, fat or muscle while also redistributing them. Majority of our patients are satisfied with the outcome of Eyelid Surgery.
What is a Brow Lift and how is it performed?
Brow lift surgery is also known as a forehead lift which involves the elimination of wrinkled sagging skin, deep groves on the forehead, improving frown lines, raising sagging brows and the repositioning of the brow line to its ideal position giving patients a more youthful and natural appearance. There are two methods involved in performing Brow Lift surgery: traditional brow lift and endoscopic brow lift which is a less-invasive procedure than the traditional one.In traditional brow lift, general anesthesia is given enabling the surgeon to make incisions across the forehead below the hairline. After the removal of excess skin, the skin is lifted to smooth and reposition the eyebrows. The incisions are closed with sutures. With regards to an endoscopic brow lift, general anesthesia is given and the surgeon makes several small incisions along the scalp. In order to get a better insight into the operating area, the surgeon inserts an endoscope, which is a flexible thin tube with a tiny camera attached, through these incisions. With the use of other surgical tools, the surgeon lifts the forehead skin, repositions the brows and removes muscle tissue causing frown lines. Excess skin is also removed and incisions are closed with sutures. Once the treatment site is completely healed, the results are permanent, noticeable, and natural-looking.
What is Botox Cosmetic?
Botox Cosmetic is the only FDA approved quick and effective treatment that temporarily reduces moderate to severe frown lines between eyebrows, crow’s feet around the corners of the eyes and wrinkles on the forehead through minimal invasive injections. Botox treatment gives your face a more revitalized and youthful appearance. Botox injections are made from botulinum toxin type A, which is a muscle relaxing agent approved by FDA for various uses. It blocks signals from the nerves to the muscles that are responsible for repeated actions causing wrinkles and fine lines and in this way these muscles are unable to contract which results in relaxing the wrinkles and making them smooth. As the procedure is quick with less discomfort, usually there is no need of anesthesia but if sensitivity to pain is a concern then the surgeon uses ice or numbing cream to numb the treatment area. During the procedure, the surgeon injects the Botox by using a small needle directly into the muscles causing fine lines and wrinkles. The results start to appear within 24-48 hours after the treatment and they can typically last for four months.
How does the fillers injectable gel give you a youthful look?
The soft tissue fillers or dermal fillers gives you a youthful appearance by plumping up, contouring and smoothing the wrinkles and fine lines around the eyes and lift the brow area. These fillers are gel-like substances that are injected underneath the treated skin to restore the lost volume and smooth out the wrinkles and fine lines. The treatment is quick, easy, and non-invasive and the results are immediate that last up to four months or more than a year. Not every wrinkle-filler is right for treating every type of wrinkle therefore different types of injectable fillers are available. Determining the appropriate type of filler depends on the individuals’ specific condition with regards to their wrinkles and fine lines.
